■520    ▼aThis  paper  argued  that  although  explaining  pathology  from  the  perspective  of  early  childhood  experience  is  necessary,  it  is  not  sufficient  in  that  it  fails  to  address  pathology  in  terms  of  spirituality  implicit  in  adult  relationships.  The  work  of  Melanie  Klein  demonstrated  the  impact  of  early  relationships  on  the  formation  of  the  psyche,  and  a  clinical  case  example,  called  Shelley,  provided  a  closer  look  at  the  psychic  mechanisms  described  by  Klein:  the  paranoid-schizoid  position,  splitting,  and  projective  identification.  To  address  the  value  of  adult  relationships  for  spiritual  growth,  an  area  not  covered  by  Klein,  the  trinitarian  theology  of  Stanley  J.  Grenz  provided  a  model  for  relationships  and  identity.  Only  a  therapeutic  relationship  grounded  in  both  psychological  and  spiritual  understandings  of  the  human  person  could  provide  the  space  necessary  for  the  client's  psychological  and  spiritual  healing  and  transformation.
