■520    ▼aChapter  2  considered  the  engagement  of  those  evangelicals  who  rejected  the  theology  of  Karl  Barth,  and  understood  it  to  be  the  great  theological  rival  for  twentieth-century  evangelicalism.  Major  attention  was  given  to  the  responses  of  Cornelius  Van  Til  and  Carl  F.  H.  Henry,  and  smaller  sections  given  to  Fred  Klooster,  Charles  C.  Ryrie,  John  Warwick  Montgomery,  Gordon  Clark,  and  Francis  A.  Schaeffer.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  analyzed  the  responses  of  those  evangelicals  who  entered  into  a  critical  dialogue  with  the  theology  of  Karl  Barth.  Neither  accepting  his  system  as  an  evangelical  model,  nor  rejecting  it  as  heresy,  these  evangelicals  presented  a  dialectical  approach.  Included  in  this  chapter  are  major  considerations  of  the  responses  of  Donald  G.  Bloesch  and  G.  C.  Berkouwer.  Smaller  sections  reviewed  the  engagements  of  Clark  H.  Pinnock,  Colin  Brown,  and  Klaas  Runia.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  was  to  analyze  the  theological  dynamic  in  the  encounter  between  evangelicals  and  the  theology  of  Karl  Barth.  The  term  "evangelical"  refers  in  this  dissertation  to  the  movement  within  conservative  Protestantism  which  identifies  itself  by  its  commitment  to  conservative  theology  and  its  willingness  to  enter  into  theological  discourse  with  the  larger  context  of  Christian  faith.  A  typology  of  the  evangelical  response  to  Barth  was  suggested,  with  three  models  of  response  forming  the  basic  structure  of  the  study.
■520    ▼aThe  third  model  of  response,  the  evangelical  appropriation  of  Karl  Barth,  included  major  considerations  of  the  engagements  of  Bernard  Ramm  and  Thomas  F.  Torrance,  with  attention  given  also  to  E.  J.  Carnell,  Donald  W.  Dayton,  and  Geoffrey  Bromiley.  These  evangelicals  call,  in  differing  degrees,  for  the  appropriation  of  Karl  Barth  as  a  model  for  evangelical  theology.
