■520    ▼aChapter  1  gives  evidence  for  a  need  of  such  a  methodological  approach  by  offering  a  brief  history  of  research  into  the  book  of  Judges,  with  attention  given  to  the  Jephthah  narrative.  This  survey  shows  the  need  of  approaching  a  biblical  text  with  an  interdisciplinary  methodology.  Within  this  chapter  the  methodology  employed  in  this  dissertation  is  defined.
■520    ▼aChapter  2  provides  a  discussion  of  the  element  of  content,  or  the  identification  of  evidence  (sources),  within  the  Jephthah  narrative.  Although  results  from  source  and  form  analysis  are  not  significant,  the  application  of  tradition-history  and  redaction  criticism  have  yielded  some  valuable  results.  Of  particular  interest  is  the  discussion  on  the  geographical  setting  of  the  narrative  and  its  possible  effect  upon  the  narrative's  content.
■520    ▼aThe  final  chapter  offers  several  areas  of  dialogue  between  methodologies.  The  implications  of  a  literary-historical  methodology  are  also  discussed.  Conclusions  are  offered  regarding  content  and  shape  within  the  Jephthah  narrative.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  analyze  the  Jephthah  narrative  to  determine  content  and  shape  within  the  narrative.  Content  is  equated  with  sources.  Shape  is  equated  with  form  or  literary  design.  Therefore,  the  methodology  employed  needs  to  be  of  an  interdisciplinary  nature.  The  methodology  employed  in  this  dissertation  is  termed  "literary-historical"  in  that  it  seeks  dialogue  between  historical  critical  and  literary  critical  methodologies.
■520    ▼aThe  shape  of  the  narrative  is  discussed  in  Chapter  3.  Since  shape  is  a  literary  term,  newer  forms  of  literary  criticism  are  employed  to  determine  the  structure  and  unity  of  the  narrative.  The  narrative  is  determined  to  be  a  coherent  unit  based  upon  the  presence  of  various  literary  devices.
