요약 : Arminius perceived redemption to be the creator's re-creation of fallen humanity in the image of God through Jesus Christ's exercise of the three-fold offices of prophet, priest, and king in which he acts as mediator between God and humanity. Grace is the communication of this redemption to sinners who are united to the risen humanity of Christ through the Holy Spirit in anticipation of their eventual union with the triune God in eschatological beatitude. In justification, sanctification, and election, the redeemed come to share in the grace of Christ through the Spirit of God in such a manner as to preserve the integrity of both divine and created realities. The conflict about grace and free will must then be understood in the light of God's creation and redemption of the world through Jesus Christ.

요약 : In contrast to the voluntarist understanding of the relation between the creator and the creation which had its origins in the late medieval theology which began with John Duns Scotus and which was later repeated and developed in the Calvinist scholastic theologies of supralapsarianism and infralapsarianism, Arminius' own understanding of creation was influenced greatly by that of the medieval theologian Thomas Aquinas. Thomistic influence is found in Arminius' teleological method and in his theology of creation, of God's knowledge, will and actions, of God's creation of humanity in the image of God, and of divine providence over a fallen creation.

요약 : The conflict between the Dutch Protestant theologian Jacobus Arminius and his opponents, the scholastic Calvinists, has often been misconstrued because it has been portrayed as primarily a disagreement about the relation between grace and free will. On the contrary, it is the thesis of this dissertation that the chief disagreements between Arminius and his opponents arose out of different ways of construing the relation between God and the world and of God's activity in redemption. It is the intent of this study to examine Arminius' understanding of both creation and redemption (or re-creation) and in that light to re-examine his understanding of the theology of grace.
