요약 : In contrast, the Reformed tradition supplied a remodeled paradigmatic framework for understanding the relation of the two realms and a "theocratic" perspective which helped to develop the theological scheme for its resistance theory. Through our textual analysis of the two groups of Huguenot writings, we have established that the Calvinist resistance literature possessed a distinctive theology, partially shared by the French political literature, marked by desacralization, conscientization, covenantal correlation, and vocational praxis. These theological themes, together with their theological argumentation, constitute the Calvinist resistance theology, a contextual development in continuity with the older Calvinist doctrinal position. Through this theology the French Calvinists claimed resistance to both unjust and impious rulers, who threatened both the political and religious realms by their tyranny, as a legitimate option.

요약 : In this dissertation I set out to explore the nature of the theology in the French Calvinist resistance literature. I proposed to study the most representative and influential Huguenot writings which were published during 1572-1579. I demonstrated that these writings can be properly divided into two groups: the Calvinist resistance literature, which exhibits a Calvinist doctrinal perspective; and the French political literature, which only partially shares that perspective.

요약 : To determine the theological distinctiveness of these Huguenot writings, we need to investigate how they were indebted to their doctrinal antecedents, since some scholars have argued that they had borrowed their resistance theory from the medieval and the Lutheran traditions, especially the Magdeburg Confession. Our study showed that many elements of the Calvinist resistance arguments indeed already existed in these antecedent traditions, and the Magdeburg Confession probably served as one of the links for their transmission to the French Calvinists. However, on close examination, it appears that neither of these two traditions in fact proved to furnish the same comprehensive theological scheme as the Huguenots to support its resistance theories. Furthermore, the Lutheran tradition generally justified resistance to rulers only when tyranny invaded the religious realm and thus primarily for the sake of "true religion.".
