요약 : By the second half of the twentieth century studies in the book of Joshua had reached an impasse. Avenues of interpretation proposed by historians, archaelologists, sociologists and literary critics seem to have exhausted all of the possibilities for understanding the book of Joshua. On the other hand, the third quarter of this century saw promise for Old Testament interpretation through the application of principles of general linguistics to the Hebrew text.

요약 : Examination of the thirteen episodes in Joshua 1-11 issues in a morphology of the conquest narrative while confirming the general validity of analysis based on verb hierarchy. Structural analysis of Joshua 1-11 points to it as a prophetic literary work.
초록/해제
요약 : The present study grew out of the Third World context in a missionary setting in Latin America. It is the product of developing concerns: pastoral (liberation theology), biblical (the meaning of Joshua 1-11), and hermeneutical (search for an approach to the text). The search for fresh hermeneutic tools led to the textlinguistic approach of Robert Longacre as set forth in his studies on the flood narrative (1976) and the Joseph story (1989). This work follows two of Longacre's basic principles: it focuses on the text above sentence level and it makes use of functional verb hierarchy as a means to uncover discourse structure. In the process of the study broad principles of textlinguistics are called into play.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation has 2 goals: (1) to contribute toward the understanding of Joshua 1-11, and (2) to test the theory of verb hierarchy as a hermeneutical tool as proposed in the works of Robert Longacre and his associates in the field. As a pre-exegetical work, it lays foundations for sentence level exegesis.
