요약 : An introductory chapter lays out the methodology and goals of the dissertation. Chapters Two and Three focus on Luther's confusing and sometimes contradictory interpretation of Eve, seeking to explicate his understanding of her position vis-a-vis her husband. Building upon a consideration of eight ancient and medieval interpreters of Eve, Chapter Two presents a close reading of the young Luther's exegesis of Genesis 1-3 as found in his Declamationes in Genesin (1523-24). Chapter Three analyzes Luther's mature (and different) interpretation of Eve from the well-known Lectures on Genesis (1535-45) in the context both of Philip Melanchthon's exegesis, and that of Reformed commentators. I argue that Luther's paradoxical pronouncements about Eve in those Lectures are not ultimately contradictory, but present a generally coherent view of Eve and her position. Luther's mature conception of Eve should be understood as a development of traditional exegesis, particularly that of Augustine and John Chrysostom.

요약 : Chapters Four and Five examine Luther's interpretation of six additional women--Sarah, Hagar, the daughters of Lot, Rachel, and Potiphar's wife--using patristic, medieval and Reformation era commentators for comparison. While Luther interprets these women in ways similar to his predecessors and contemporaries, some distinctive features also become apparent, the most surprising of which is his development and expansion of ascetic readings of the sexuality of the saints. I argue that Luther's charitable treatment of moral questions related to these women flows not from an implicit feminism, but from his commitment to the sanctity of the patriarchal households on account of the presence and promise of the Word of God.

요약 : This dissertation examines Martin Luther's interpretation of select female figures in Genesis comparatively, setting Luther's treatment of them within the context of the exegesis of ancient, medieval and Reformation era commentators. I argue that Luther's interpretation of these women, for all its fresh originality, generally remains within the boundaries of exegesis prevailing among his predecessors and contemporaries, and is in that sense traditional. Luther's willingness to stress the hierarchical equality of Eve with her husband and to defend the character of these women has numerous antecedents and parallels in Christian exegesis.
