요약 : Although dating any remains specifically to the time of either David or Solomon is uncertain, the pattern of Egyptian material remains during the Iron age in Palestine shows a decline after the beginning of Iron I and no resuscitation until Iron II, the period following the time of David and Solomon. An analysis of the few Egyptian remains found in excavations suggests that contacts between Egypt and Palestine at the time of David and Solomon were minimal.

요약 : Finally, an examination of the references to Egyptian-Israelite contacts found in the Hebrew Bible concerning the time of David and Solomon shows that few of these references suggest any significant contacts. Indeed, several indicate that relations between Israel and Egypt were hostile. The three incidents that might suggest friendly, sustained contacts between both states probably are not historical and, even if they are, invite different interpretations.

요약 : Scholars have observed that ancient Egypt had a profound impact on the peoples of ancient Palestine, including the Israelites. Many of these scholars have attributed much of this impact on Palestine and the Israelites to the time of David and Solomon, their conclusions being based essentially on a handful of references in the Hebrew Bible that suggest that contacts with Egypt were strong at this time. Seldom is much weight given to other sources of information that could alter or contradict this reconstruction, namely the Egyptian epigraphical evidence and the archaeological evidence from Palestine. This study proposes to analyze all of this evidence, including the references in the Hebrew Bible, and provide a different evaluation.

요약 : The conclusions of this study are essentially negative. The general picture of ancient Egypt's international contacts during the late 21st dynasty and early 22nd dynasty, the approximate time of David and Solomon, is one of isolation from the ancient Near East. This picture is borne out by the extant Egyptian texts referring to contacts with Palestine at this time. These texts indicate that relations between Egypt and Palestine were strained, with an invasion by Shoshenq I early in the 22nd dynasty. This picture is reinforced by the archaeological evidence from Palestine.
