■520    ▼aAs  a  method  of  approach,  this  study  examined  how  Paul  used  these  references  to  the  Spirit  as  a  means  of  confirmation,  that  is,  how  he  used  them  to  support  or  confirm  the  argument  he  was  making  where  the  reference  occurred.  By  way  of  background,  Chapter  Two  examined  (a)  the  use  of  rhetoric  at  the  time  of  Paul,  (b)  other  means  of  confirmation  used  by  Paul,  including  the  Old  Testament,  the  life  and  teaching  of  Jesus,  and  the  experiences  of  Paul  and  his  churches,  and  (c)  the  terminology  used  by  Paul  to  refer  to  the  Spirit.
■520    ▼aChapter  Seven  summarized  the  conclusions  reached.  It  noted  that  the  way  Paul  referred  to  the  Spirit  indicates  the  value  he  found  in  those  references  to  confirm  his  arguments  in  certain  situations,  and  also  the  practical  aim  he  intended  his  references  to  have  on  his  churches.
■520    ▼aChapters  Three  through  Six  categorized  the  references  to  the  Spirit  in  Paul  based  on  the  content  of  the  passage  in  which  they  occurred.  These  categories  included  confirming  (a)  the  reality  of  the  reception  of  the  gospel,  (b)  the  reality  of  the  new  life  in  Christ,  (c)  the  future  hope  of  believers,  and  (d)  the  authority  of  church  leadership.  At  the  end  of  each  chapter,  the  references  were  examined  in  terms  of  their  number,  terminology,  use,  doctrinal  and  experiential  aspects,  and  application  by  Paul.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  was  to  examine  the  significance  of  the  way  Paul  referred  to  the  Holy  Spirit  in  his  letters.  Studies  on  the  Spirit  in  Paul  typically  center  on  what  Paul  wrote  about  the  Spirit  from  a  doctrinal  or  theological  perspective,  that  is,  their  focus  is  on  examining  the  terms  he  used  to  describe  the  Spirit  and  his  work.  This  study,  however,  looked  not  so  much  at  the  terms  he  used  but  rather  how  and  where  his  references  to  the  Spirit  occurred,  and  what  those  references  indicated  concerning  what  he  believed  about  the  Spirit,  and  how  he  expected  the  Spirit  to  be  understood  in  his  churches.
