요약 : Catholic charismatic renewal was born in 1967 at Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, PA. It spread quickly to Notre Dame and Michigan State Universities and soon flourished throughout North America. Within five years, Catholic charismatic prayer groups thrived on every continent. The purpose of this dissertation is to introduce the origins of Catholic charismatic renewal (1967 to 1975), to establish reasons for its unprecedented growth, and to explore the ways in which the renewal overcame difficulties in its struggle for affirmation by the Church hierarchy.

요약 : Finally, the charismatic renewal benefited from the gifted leadership of men and women of Catholic, Protestant and Pentecostal traditions who were willing to work together for Church renewal. Preeminent among them was Cardinal Leon-Joseph Suenens, who shepherded the renewal to the heart of the Church. This is the story of Catholic charismatic renewal, from general suspicion to papal affirmation, in eight eventful years.

요약 : Secondly, Vatican II opened the door to charismatic awareness by its debates and discussions, decrees and constitutions, highlighting the Holy Spirit's presence in the life of the Church. Third, Catholic charismatics exemplified commitment to traditional concerns for the sacraments and apostolic authority. This helped to persuade the hierarchy of the positive intentions of the charismatic renewal. Fourth, Catholic charismatics had a strong sense of community, developed from Church tradition, which served as both example and inspiration to Protestants concerning the importance of community life.

요약 : The dissertation will demonstrate five primary reasons why the Catholic Church became open to the charismatic experience. First, there was a long, if sporadic, history of charismatic activity in the Church. The New Testament is replete with manifestations of the Holy Spirit, from the time of Christ to the end of the first century. Tradition also bears witness to spirit-filled individuals and movements which influenced the Church throughout the centuries.
