■520    ▼aIn  this  project,  Mulder  investigates  the  extent  to  which  the  desired  outcome  of  Lutheran  preaching  is  further  realized  when  the  Lutheran  Preacher  adopts  the  self-image  of  representing  Christ  the  Bridegroom  to  the  church,  Christ's  bride.  The  project  begins  by  examining  what  Lutherans  preach,  namely,  Holy  Scripture  properly  divided  into  Law  and  Gospel.  It  continues  by  developing  a  Lutheran  theology  of  preaching  according  to  which  the  goal  of  Lutheran  preaching  is  to  let  hearers  encounter  Christ  so  that  they  are  strengthened  for  faith  (justification)  and  discipleship  (sanctification).  On  the  basis  of  this  theology  of  preaching,  Mulder  argues  that  pastors  who  view  themselves  as  representing  Christ  as  the  Bridegroom  will  more  effectively  realize  the  goal  of  their  preaching.
■520    ▼aThe  final  two  chapters  present  the  results  of  Mulder's  research.  Mulder  tested  the  proposed  self-image  by  enlisting  four  pastors  to  take  part  in  a  one-day  preaching  workshop  in  which  Mulder  introduced  and  explained  the  self-image.  Each  pastor  agreed  to  preach  a  sermon-series  with  the  new  self-image  in  the  forefront  of  his  mind  as  he  prepared  each  sermon;  each  also  agreed  to  choose  eight  members  of  his  congregation  as  focus  group  members  to  fill  out  a  questionnaire  on  each  sermon  in  the  series.  At  the  end  of  the  series,  Mulder  met  with  the  focus  group  from  each  congregation  and  then  with  the  four  pastors.  The  results  of  the  investigation  suggest  that  the  proposed  self-image,  that  of  representing  Christ  as  the  Bridegroom,  does  help  the  Lutheran  preacher  more  fully  realize  the  goal  of  his  preaching.
