요약 : Early studies of berith going back to Wellhausen are reviewed: Valeton, Kraetzschmar, Davidson, Pedersen and Begrich. Despite their differences there is meaningful common ground in their views of the essence and range of use of berith. The comparative studies of Mendenhall, Baltzer, McCarthy, Weinfeld, Hillers, Tucker and others are considered; the ANE treaties and grants are judged to shed light on the biblical covenants. Nicholson's arguments to the contrary are found not to be compelling. The lexical studies of Jepsen and Kutsch are then considered.

요약 : It is concluded that a berith is never utterly one-sided; there is always an element of agreement and mutual responsibility. The oath with its curse are essential to it; they give it its life-and-death seriousness. A berith is binding and unchangeable; it may involve a close personal bond; there is always a solemn obligation involved. It can label arrangements which are parity, treaty-like or grant-like.

요약 : Regarding the Sinai and Abrahamic covenants: the views of dispensationalism (Darby, Scofield, Chafer, Ryrie) and covenant theology (Hodge, Berkhof, Vos, Murray, Kline, Robertson, McComiskey; plus articles by Thompson [ ISBE], Smick [TWOT], and McConville [NIDOTTE ]) are examined. Although covenant theologians have come closer, none of them had defined berith/covenant carefully; their respective views of the relationship between the two covenants reflect this deficiency. Recently, Waltke's description of the nature and use of berith, and "progressive dispensationalism's" (Saucy, Blaising and Bock) view of the relationship between the two covenants, are found to accord with the results of the present study.

요약 : The initial purpose of this study is to develop a definition of the Hebrew term berith (covenant) which does justice to the full range of OT data, is based on the canonical form of the text, and is informed by the comparative studies of ancient Near Eastern counterparts. The goal is to identify what is essential to a berith and also the different ways it is used. The secondary purpose is to apply that understanding to the question of how the Sinai (Mosaic) covenant relates to the Abrahamic covenant, with a view toward how the OT applies to the Christian.
