요약 : Holiness is the key to living the Christian life and understanding holiness is the key to the sermons. In this sense Newman fits into the mainstream of Anglican spirituality. The conclusion of the dissertation offers a reflection on this aspect of Anglican spirituality.

요약 : In many ways the sermons were catechetical. However, the instruction was not blatant by any means. Rather, Newman sought to bring the catholic doctrines of the early church to the attention of his congregation. His intention was to integrate the doctrines, such as the real presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, the role of the Church, and baptismal regeneration, into the spiritual life and consciousness of his congregations.

요약 : Newman's primary concern was to lead his congregations into paths of holiness. Consequently, he adapted his sermon technique to this purpose. This aspect of the sermons is discussed in detail in the second chapter of the dissertation. In that chapter, theories of rhetorical technique are presented to provide a philosophical basis for this new preaching style. Newman's goal as a preacher was to remake the Anglican sermon. He departed from the moralistic preaching of the tradition. He began to develop a style which spoke to the heart rather than to the moral conscience of his listeners. His ability to integrate the theological content of the doctrines into a spiritual force gave the sermons their strength.

요약 : The career of John Henry Cardinal Newman as an Anglican has received less attention than his Roman Catholic career. This dissertation discusses the Anglican period of his life. Its focus is on the sermons, The Parochial and Plain Sermon, preached while he was Vicar of St. Mary's Church, Oxford, the parish church of Oxford University.

요약 : The third chapter discusses Newman's theology of sin and grace. Chapter four discusses specific topics in theology and their relation to the spiritual life. The dissertation seeks to understand how Newman related theology to living the spiritual life.
초록/해제
요약 : This pulpit provided Newman with a powerful position. However, Newman did not use it to preach any particular aspect of the Anglican tradition - the Evangelical, the High Church, the emerging position of the Tractarians. Instead he used it to preach what he believed to he the essence of the living the Christian life. He maintained that the crux of the Christian life was not only the desire to live a holy life, but its absolute necessity.
