요약 : However, for Chrysostom, caring for the poor and the outcasts manifests alien citizenship and the universal commonwealth of Christ, in which all those who are citizens of the heavenly Jerusalem through baptism are considered equal. He argues for the importance of God's grace as motivating and enabling the Christian life and Christian charity. He has a doctrine of grace, which needs to be linked to baptism. He virtually equates his ideal with the monastic life.
초록/해제
요약 : John Chrysostom, a deacon and presbyter from 381 to 397 in Antioch and a bishop from 398 to 404 in Constantinople, died in exile in 407. His attempts to implement his ideal concerning the poor, the rich and the authentic Christian community in the institutional church and state led to his martyrdom. His ideal is pitched so high, that most people would have ignored it because it was so far from their grasp. He was called a glorious failure.
초록/해제
요약 : One question that might arise is Chrysostom's attitude towards the Jews. If his ideal is a Christian commonwealth in which the monastic ideal is a actualized, then the Jews are a major difficulty, since he doesn't seem to want to include them. Chrysostom certainly was far from showing humane respect towards people of a different faith. But he should not be stigmatized therefore as an anti-Semite.
초록/해제
요약 : The issues surrounding the poor and the rich were continually discussed in the writings of the early church fathers. Chrysostom has often been cited as acknowledging this problem from the progressive view among the early fathers. He is understood as a moralist and ethical preacher of his time. Some view Chrysostom as no more than a moralizer.
초록/해제
요약 : While Chrysostom seeks to implement the egalitarian implication of his ideal into practice by refining almsgiving by stewardship rather than the patron-client relationship, his ideal represents a critique not only of the institutional aspects of the Empire but also of ideal of the Church. He has no wish to present the church as opposed to the state. Rather, he argues that his ideal should inform and transform the institutional aspects of both church and state.
