요약 : Neuropsychology demonstrates that emotion and cognition are inextricably interrelated: on the one hand, emotion influences the content of cognition, information processing, the memory system, judgment, and the decision-making process. On the other hand, cognitive faculties such as values, goals, motivation, and interpretation deeply impact the elicitation and the regulation of emotion. Through interdisciplinary dialogue, I argue that affection plays a significant role in the spiritual discernment process. Knowing God's loving presence and responding to such a personal Being cannot be accomplished by the simple acquisition of speculative doctrinal knowledge, but by the engagement of the whole person. Discernment involves the coordinated interplay of a discerner's thinking, feeling, willing, and acting. I postulate that affection functions as a signal and transformational power during the discernment process. I also argue that emotion is a necessary component in communication and in interpersonal relationship with both God and with humans. Finally, I assert that the practice of discernment can be fostered by the cultivation of a virtuous affective disposition grounded in Christian values and beliefs.

요약 : This dissertation explores the role of affection in Christian spiritual discernment through an interdisciplinary dialogue between Jonathan Edwards and neuropsychology. In Edwards's theology, spiritual discernment described as a communicative and relational process of personal "consent to the divine Being." Edwards understood divine communication as the fundamental disposition of God and reality as an active and dynamic process of becoming. This perspective suggests a conception of discernment as a dynamic, interactive and formational process. Edwards's integrative construal of the tripartite faculties of the human mind leads to a holistic view of discernment. Moreover, Edwards appropriately recognized affection as an essential constituent of a religious experience. Defining Christian discernment as---"a holistic and formational process of intentionally becoming aware of God's active presence in the world and of appropriately responding to God's call in a concrete context,"---I suggest that discernment is a dialogical, relational, formational, and holistic process.
