■520    ▼aChapter  2  was  an  examination  of  the  Christology  of  Leonardo  Boff.  This  entailed  an  analysis  of  Boff's  methodology;  view  of  the  life,  praxis,  mission,  death  and  resurrection  of  Jesus;  work  of  the  cosmic  Christ;  and  reinterpretation  of  Chalcedon's  christological  dogma.  The  chapter  concluded  with  the  implications  of  Boff's  Christology  for  selected  aspects  of  his  theology.

■520    ▼aChapter  4  was  concerned  with  the  contributions  of  Boff  and  Sobrino  individually,  and  of  liberation  Christology  as  a  whole.  It  was  shown  that  this  Christology  makes  three  general  contributions:  (1)  the  recognition  of  contextual  nature  of  Christology;  (2)  the  offer  of  a  liberation  Christology  from  below;  and  (3)  the  theological  impact  of  liberation  upon  theology  in  general.
■520    ▼aChapter  5  was  composed  of  a  critique  by  selected  non-Latin  American  theologians.  The  official  Roman  Catholic  response  had  two  parts:  (1)  selected  sermons  and  speeches  by  Pope  John  Paul  II;  and  (2)  the  Congregation  for  the  Doctrine  of  the  Faith's  Instruction  on  Certain  Aspects  of  the  "Theology  of  Liberation"  and  Instruction  on  Christian  Freedom  and  Liberation.  The  Protestant  response  to  liberation  Christology  had  three  parts:  (1)  a  liberal  Protestant  critique  by  Schubert  M.  Ogden;  (2)  an  Evangelical  critique  by  Clark  H.  Pinnock;  and  (3)  this  writer's  critique.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  the  dissertation  was  to  examine  the  christological  contributions  of  Leonardo  Boff  and  Jon  Sobrino  to  contemporary  Christology.  Chapter  1  served  as  an  introduction  to  liberation  theology.  The  historical  continuity  between  Vatican  II  and  the  Second  General  Conference  of  Latin  American  Bishops  in  Medellin,  Colombia  was  first  established.  Then  the  roles  of  the  hermeneutic  circle,  marxism,  partiality  for  the  poor,  and  liberation  as  God's  historical  work  were  examined.
