요약 : As a result of this investigation, the claim is put forth and developed that openness to God and reality is fostered: (1) by encountering a certain content, the biblical narrative centered in Jesus Christ; (2) by participating in a certain context, the life and worship of the redemptive community; and (3) through engaging in a certain process, which we call "practical biblical interpretation." In this process, the prejudices that make up our present identity are intentionally engaged and put into play with Scripture in conversation with others. Through repeated participation in this process, Christian identity and practice are shaped and transformed.

요약 : This dissertation takes Hans-Georg Gadamer's description of the hermeneutical process as the philosophical framework for the formulation of a theologically informed, hermeneutical approach to Christian education. In making the move from Gadamer's phenomenological description of understanding to the theory and practice of Christian education, the major issue explored involves the dynamic tension Gadamer describes between the inescapable role that "prejudices" play in all understanding and the need for "openness" on the part of the interpreter. This same tension is found in the work of Christian educator, C. Ellis Nelson, in the form of a tension between socialization into the Christian tradition and the possibility of openness to new revelation from God. The question of openness is explored by means of a critical conversation between the human sciences and theology in which human beings are seen to be formally open, but existentially closed. Thus, the question of openness is seen to be closely linked to the broader questions of human identity and destiny. Further, this investigation shows that narrative plays a crucial role in both personal and Christian identity.
