■520    ▼aChapter  3  surveys  psychological  research  on  the  functions  of  humor.  This  research  addresses  the  "why"  of  humor:  why  do  we  create  and  enjoy  humor?  Five  functions  of  humor  are  distinguished  based  on  the  research.  Implications  of  this  research  for  humor  in  preaching  are  discussed.

■520    ▼aChapter  7  summarizes  the  contributions  of  psychological  and  sociological  research  toward  understanding  humor  in  preaching.  General  principles  about  humor  based  on  homiletical  research  are  reviewed.  Psychological  and  sociological  insights  from  previous  chapters  provide  support  for  these  principles.  Furthermore,  the  psychological  and  sociological  research  from  previous  chapters  contribute  additional  principles  related  to  humor  in  preaching.  Suggestions  for  further  study  are  addressed.
■520    ▼aThe  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  investigate  how  research  in  the  fields  of  psychology  and  sociology  contribute  toward  an  understanding  of  the  appropriate  use  of  humor  in  preaching.  Humor  in  homiletical  literature  is  assessed  in  Chapter  2.  Based  on  the  lack  of  homiletical  material  on  humor,  deeper  inspection  into  this  topic  is  proposed.
