■520    ▼aIn  addition  to  providing  close  readings  of  the  Gospel  of  John  and  Proust's  Recherche  in  their  original  languages  (focusing  strictly  on  issues  of  sexuality  and  its  relation  to  immortality),  the  author  places  his  study  in  the  context  of  the  intensifying  rivalry  between  conservative  Christianity  and  marginalized  sexuality  in  the  Western  world  and  calls  for  a  radical  reexamination  of  commonly  held  assumptions  about  religion  and  sexuality.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  relationship  between  sexuality  and  immortality  in  two  classic  texts  of  the  Western  tradition.  Arguing  that  the  Gospel  of  John  and  Proust's  Recherche  are  shaped  in  fundamental  ways  by  the  experience  of  marginalized  sexuality,  the  author  undertakes  close  readings  of  each  to  demonstrate  the  relationship  of  homosexuality  to  the  Gospel  of  John  and  autoeroticism  to  Proust's  Recherche.  Because  the  Western  Christian  tradition  has  equated  heterosexual  continence  with  the  achievement  of  heaven,  the  readings  which  are  offered  in  this  study  portray  voices  which  are  discordant  with  or  subversive  of  that  tradition.
