■520    ▼aChapter  three  discusses  music  and  the  ways  that  it  is  used  in  worship.  It  was  shown  that  a  ministerial  function  of  music  is  to  serve  the  worshiping  assembly  as  the  symbol  of  the  ineffable  world  of  feelings  associated  with  life  and  faith.
■520    ▼aThe  first  chapter  gives  an  explication  of  Langer's  theory  of  art  which  draws  a  connection  between  feeling  and  form.  Her  definition  of  art  is  that  artistic  forms  are  symbols  which  are  created  to  express  the  ineffable  world  of  semblance  (human  feeling  and  experience).
■520    ▼aThe  fourth  and  final  chapter  draws  theological  conclusions  about  worship  based  on  the  comparison  of  Langer's  theory  to  the  art  forms  of  preaching  and  worship  music.  The  dissertation  concludes  by  offering  sample  critiques  of  two  sermons  and  two  hymns  based  on  the  criteria  established  for  aesthetic  critique.
■520    ▼aThe  second  chapter  uses  Langer's  theory  to  demonstrate  that  preaching  is  an  art.  Specifically,  it  was  shown  that  preaching  is  a  poetic  type  of  discourse  and  that  preaching  needs  to  be  creatively  crafted  and  presented.
■520    ▼aThe  thesis  of  this  dissertation  is  that  worship  is  a  form  of  art  and  that  in  order  for  worship  to  be  most  effective  for  the  worshiping  assembly,  those  engaged  in  worship  leadership  should  be  aware  of  the  artistic  responsibility  associated  with  their  roles.  Special  attention  was  give  to  two  forms  that  occur  in  worship,  preaching  and  worship  music.  To  show  the  artistic  nature  of  worship,  the  philosophy  of  art  of  Susanne  Langer  in  Feeling  and  Form  was  used  as  a  theoretical  foundation.
