■520    ▼aThe  deacon's  wife  has  been  called  a  "bridge  between  the  clergy  and  the  laity"  (Ratigan  and  Swidler,  1990).  Deacons'  wives  occupy  an  unequaled  position  in  the  Catholic  Church  in  two  distinct  ways:  First,  they  are  married  to  ordained  clergy,  permanent  deacons.  Second,  most  of  the  wives  are  trained  with  their  husbands  in  the  same  three  year  formation  process.  Until  1971,  no  permanent  deacons  existed  in  modem  Roman  Catholicism,  and  all  ordained  clergy  were  celibate,  not  married  men.  This  dissertation  seeks  to  illuminate  the  dynamics  associated  with  the  new  and  emerging  role  of  deacons'  wives  in  the  Catholic  Church.  Symbolic  interactionism,  through  processual  role  theory  and  structural  role  theory  will  guide  the  research  questions  and  hypotheses  in  the  study.  This  cross-sectional  study  of  the  deacons  (n  =  101)  and  their  wives  (n  =  97)  of  the  Cleveland  Diocese  employs  both  qualitative  and  quantitative  analyses,  by  which  the  wives'  data  will  be  assessed.  Additionally,  a  typology  of  adaptation  to  the  emerging  role  of  the  wife  will  be  tested.  It  is  measured  using  dimensions  of  satisfaction  and  identification  with  the  ministry.  Findings  suggest  that  deacons'  wives  identify  strongly  with  the  diaconate  ministry,  and  are  also  highly  satisfied  with  their  experiences.  The  typology  reveals  some  areas  of  tension  for  wives,  and  offers  some  profiles  of  adaptation  patterns.  This  research  demonstrates  the  efficacy  of  using  complementary  sociological  theories  (structural  and  process  role  theories)  when  examining  an  emerging  role.
