요약 : Although left unfinished, Thomas Aquinas' Postilla super Psalmos is a rich and complex work worthy of close study. As Thomas states in its prologue, the Psalms contain all of theology and seem to be "fere$\...$evangelium et non prophetia" (almost Gospel and not prophecy). Despite his own perception of the value of the Psalms and despite his own considerable efforts in Super Psalmos to tease out its meaning, modern scholars have tended to neglect this work. The present study offers the first sustained examination in English of Super Psalmos. It combines literary, comparative and thematic perspectives in order to highlight both Thomas' mature theological positions on central themes and his preferred methods for handling Scripture. Like much scholarly writing of the period, one of the distinctive literary features of Super Psalmos is its highly structured, organizational method. Aquinas' decisions about textual division, however, were driven by more than concern for clarity and accessibility. Well-versed in mnemonic technique, in which structure figures centrally, and cognizant of memory's ethical implications--what one memorizes can affect one morally--Thomas arranges Super Psalmos to facilitate memorization. He seeks thereby to produce students who are not only informed about the Psalms but also personally formed by them. Another literary feature of Super Psalmos, its profusion of highly sapiential and christological scriptural citations, further specifies Aquinas' intentions for the commentary and hopes for his students. Finally, the themes that he announces at the outset and to which he returns throughout--Christ, the Psalms' content, and prayer, their form--are not unique to Super Psalmos. Indeed, this work stands at the culmination of a life devoted to reflection on and practice informed by these two themes. By comparing Aquinas' treatment of them in Super Psalmos with that found in the more familiar Summary theologiae, this dissertation advances our understanding of his mature thought on these and other theological issues. It also develops a picture of Aquinas as theologian and teacher who, based on his reading of the Psalms, encourages others to join him in imitating Christ's wisdom which plays out in prayer and good works.
