■520    ▼aAugustine  of  Hippo  is  the  main  authority  for  later  Christian  thinking  about  "just  war"  or  iustum  bellum.  This  dissertation  explores  the  intellectual  and  historical  background  and  the  nature  of  Augustine's  attitude  toward  war,  particularly  toward  the  propriety  and  conduct  of  Christians  participating  in  it.

■520    ▼aThe  introduction  outlines  the  topic  and  some  of  the  political  history  just  prior  to  and  during  Augustine's  era.  Chapter  one  examines  four  pagan  Latin  authors---Livy,  Sallust,  Vergil,  and  Cicero---both  for  their  ideas  about  iustum  bellum  and  for  their  influence  on  Augustine.  The  following  chapter  deals  with  the  views  of  three  of  Augustine's  Christian  predecessors:  Tertullian,  the  first  to  denounce  Christian  involvement  in  the  Roman  army;  Lactantius,  who  argued  strongly  against  Christians  using  violence  but  also  seemed  to  laud  the  victories  of  Constantine;  and  Ambrose,  the  first  to  link  Christian  faith  and  iustum  bellum.  Since  a  major  component  of  Augustine's  thought  was  the  Bible,  the  third  chapter  explicates  his  view  of  its  authority,  canonicity,  interpretation,  and  inspiration.
