요약 : Many of Germany's most strident anticlerical agitators and prophets of a new scientific worldview were organized in the Berlin network of Free Religious dissidents, atheist Freethinkers and monists. By locating the place of the main freigeistig (free-spiritual) organizations within the country's largest urban polity from the mid-nineteenth century into the Weimar Republic, this study reveals the structures of religious opposition that helped constitute the deep political and social divisions with which Germany entered modernity.
초록/해제
요약 : Part I illuminates the essential dimensions of Freigeistigkeit (free spirituality/thought) by examining how the organizations operated in the religious, the social, the educational and the political fields of Berlin between 1859 and 1924. Part II revisits two key religious conflicts of the last third of the nineteenth century, the anticatholic Kulturkampf and the rise of antisemitism, and examines the role of freigeistig anticonfessionalism in each. Part III is a group biography of the speakers of the Free Religious Congregation that shows the Freigeist as a specific type of modern intellectual. Part IV examines the relationship between Freigeistigkeit and socialism from 1887 to 1924. The identification of Freigeistigkeit with radical republicanism (Demokratie) during the Revolution of 1848 persisted in the tendency of the Freigeister to foment republican "heresies" of revisionism and radicalism within the Social Democratic Party. The final chapters examine how socialist Freigeister carried their linked principles of monist Weltanschauung and anticlericalism into the Revolution of 1918/19 and into the workers' culture movement of the early Weimar Republic.
초록/해제
요약 : This history of atheist dissidence weighs in on the scholarly debate over the relationship of secularization to the rise of modern utopian political movements. It challenges the substitution thesis of secularization, which interprets the teleological historical consciousness of modern political movements as a translation from earlier Judeo-Christian eschatology. While such substitution did take place, this dissertation argues for a relational understanding of secularization as a strategy in the struggle between social competitors over the meaning of religion. Organized atheism was a politically motivated action against the religious field and a form of competition within the religious field. In this sense it took on qualities of a "fourth confession" alongside Protestantism, Catholicism and Judaism.
