요약 : Chapter 1 documents the academic context that gives rise to this project by describing the turn to virtue in recent theological and philosophical discourse and reviewing recent attempts to make humility more palatable to contemporary sensibilities. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 each document early Christian interest in humility and seek to bring these resources to bear on contemporary debates. Chapter 2 highlights several pieces of the biblical canon that influenced the ways in which early Christians conceived of humility, focusing especially on the Isaianic servant songs (the subject of much recent scholarly interest) and the ways in which they connect with early understandings of Christ's humility. Chapter 3 surveys early Christian approaches to humility and its intellectual import, and pursues an in-depth examination of Gregory of Nyssa's reflections on human cognitive limits. Chapter 4 addresses recent scholarly debate about kenosis, and advances a constructive proposal funded by Augustine's analysis of kenosis and humility. Chapter 5 sketches the Christology that funds the account of humility proposed in dialogue with early Christian resources in chapters 2--4, and concludes the study by describing the ways in which this account of humility should aid in the cultivation of a flourishing intellectual life, especially by keeping particular intellectual vices at bay.

요약 : This study brings a variety of theological resources to bear on the now widespread effort to put humility in its proper place. While feminist and womanist thinkers have rightly questioned calls to humility because such calls tend to reinforce problematic power relations, postmodern theologians have simultaneously urged a recovery of the virtue as a necessary outcome of recent linguistic and ideological critique, which have highlighted the profound cognitive and cultural limits by which humans are governed. Like all accounts of humility, the one advanced in this study has to do with the proper handling of such limits. Yet what early Christian resources offer, and what discussions of the issue since the eighteenth century have almost universally discounted, is an account of the ways in which human limits are permeable, superable and open to modification because of the working of divine grace. This thesis is especially relevant for a renewed vision of intellectual humility---the primary aim of the project---but the study will also suggest the significance of the argument for ameliorating contemporary concerns about humility's disempowering effects.
