요약 : Chapter IV considers the theory of justice as fairness in light of the norm of cohumanity. The grave weakness in Rawls's view of "social union," bound as it is to the problematic proposition that persons wish to "complete" themselves in relationship with others. Chapter V proposes a revision to the theory which conforms to the norm of cohumanity, and which emphasizes the participatory activity of citizens in a well-ordered society. The revision also accommodates the facts of the social influence and the need for recognition, and improves the coherence of Rawls's theory overall.

요약 : Chapters II and III present Rawls's theory of justice as fairness, its mode of justification, and its underlying views of the sociality of the person. Three different levels of sociality, or dimensions of human existence constituted by social influence or interpersonal relationship, are distinguished. Persons, for Rawls, (1) are subject to social influence, (2) need the recognition of others to support them in the pursuit of their life plans, and (3) value the ties of community. Yet Rawls's understanding of community of "social union" is uncertain and incomplete.

요약 : Contemporary Christian moral theologians often claim that the human person is "social" by nature, and is fulfilled in and through social relations, or patterns of interdependence, or fellowship. A further claim is that consideration of the sociality of the person must accompany any Christian assessment of the political order. Yet careful delineation of the meaning of sociality is not often forthcoming; what is more, the precise relationship between human sociality and the realm of the political is generally left uncharted. This dissertation is an attempt to specify the theological meaning of human sociality for the purpose of devising a Christian political ethic which may responsibly take it into account.

요약 : The first chapter examines Karl Barth's theology of humanity as "cohumanity." Barth's treatment is an appropriate point of departure because it demonstrates clearly the source, meaning, and limits of the sociality claim. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the relation of cohumanity to Barth's normative view of politics and the state. It is shown that consideration of the nature of social justice in the political sphere is the fitting context for specification of the relationship. In particular, John Rawls's theory of justice is chosen for the purpose of developing the connection, since it combines attention to anthropological detail with a proper concern for the sphere of the political.
