요약 : 1618 marked the final triumph of Calvinists over Libertines and their spiritual heirs, the Arminians, in the struggle to determine the nature of the Dutch Reformed Church. Libertines, however, largely determined the role that church played in Dutch society. Though their church had unique privileges, Calvinists had to accept the coexistence of other religious groups, while a variety of mechanisms guaranteed religious tolerance.

요약 : Calvinist-Libertine conflict in Utrecht went through five stages. Between 1578 and 1586, separate Calvinist and Libertine churches coexisted. The former attracted immigrants and aspiring master craftsmen, the latter Utrecht's largely rentier elite and poor parishioners living near the Libertine Jacobskerk. War, political centralization, and social revolution gave Calvinists control of the city in 1586; their two-year theocratic regime aggressively set about recasting Dutch government and society in the image of their church. A backlash followed in 1589-90, after which Libertines dominated the single municipal Reformed church. Intense pressure finally persuaded Utrecht's Libertines to adopt a moderate Calvinism in 1605. But after four years of peace, the Remonstrant controversy broke out, a continuation in new form of the old conflict between promotors and opponents of confessional development.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation examines the conflict between Calvinist reformers and their chief opponents, known as Libertines, in the Dutch city of Utrecht between 1578 and 1618. This conflict was one of the most characteristic phenomena of the Dutch Reformation. It also reveals the nature of confessional reform in Europe between roughly 1555 and 1648 and the reasons why such reform met with widespread resistance.
초록/해제
요약 : Utrecht's Libertines were not irreligious, immoral, or Erasmian humanists. They were Reformed Protestants who opposed the tendency in Dutch Calvinism to strive for uniformity, discipline, doctrinal precision, rigid organization, and transcendent group unity. Inspired by the heritage of late medieval mysticism and the Protestant call for Christian freedom, they valued personal over institutional reform and resented excessive clerical power. They favored a model of religious community that resembled traditional Dutch society in its particularism and openness. Conservative, they perceived in Calvinism a threat to the social and political status quo.
