■520    ▼aCalvin's  differences  from  Bucer  become  especially  clear  when  Philip  Melanchthon's  interpretation  of  Romans  is  included  in  the  case  study.  Calvin's  perspective  on  how  Scripture  relates  to  pagan  literature  is  closer  to  Melanchthon's  than  to  Bucer's,  and  this  perspective  is  further  reflected  in  Calvin's  doctrines  of  justification  and  theological  anthropology--both  of  which  are  closer  to  Melanchthon's  than  to  Bucer's.  Even  when  Calvin  agrees  with  Bucer  and  differs  from  Melanchthon  on  aspects  of  predestination  and  moral  theology,  he  continues  to  diverge  from  Bucer  and  to  parallel  Melanchthon  in  signifiant  ways  on  related  issues.  Calvin  respects  Bucer  regarding  exegetical  detail  but  differs  from  him  doctrinally.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  examines  the  influence  of  Martin  Bucer  on  John  Calvin's  interpretation  of  Romans.  Its  results  challenge  the  often  repeated  thesis  that  Bucer  exercised  decisive  influence  on  Calvin's  theological  development.  Calvin  disagrees  with  Bucer  with  respect  to  how  Scripture  relates  to  pagan  literature,  and  this  difference  leads  Calvin  to  disagree  further  with  Bucer  on  several  doctrinal  and  theological  issues  that  arise  in  their  interpretations  of  Romans.  Bucer's  influence  on  Calvin  is  less  than  what  has  often  been  asserted,  and  what  influence  Bucer  does  have  on  Calvin  includes  a  negative  reaction  on  Calvin's  part.
