요약 : From the fourth century to the present, Christian theology has generally thought of the intratrinitarian relations at least partly in terms of origin: the Son has been understood as eternally begotten of the Father, the Spirit as proceeding from the Father and the Son or from the Father alone. Today, however, some theologians express doubt about the classical doctrine, either because they see no biblical warrant for the idea of eternal processions or because they think the idea is ultimately destructive of the doctrine of the Trinity itself. The purpose of the dissertation is to understand the tradition and its critics and determine whether theology should still affirm the processions.

요약 : The method followed is the examination of the trinitarian ideas of major theologians. The first three chapters are historical, tracing the development of the doctrine from the second century to the nineteenth and considering such thinkers as Athanasius, the Cappadocians, Augustine, Aquinas, Edwards, and Schleiermacher. The fourth and fifth chapters bring the discussion into the twentieth century, considering first theologians who have retained the doctrine, including Barth, Moltmann, and Torrance, and then some who have abandoned or at least revised it, such as Warfield, Boff, and Pannenberg. The last chapter consists of a response to criticisms of the tradition and an effort to place it on a secure epistemological foundation. I argue that the doctrine is still credible, and that it plays an integral role in the doctrine of the Trinity.
