■520    ▼aAt  the  same  time  that  the  New  Homileticians  were  formulating  their  new  approaches,  a  growing  number  of  contemporary  homileticians  were  arguing  that  new  homiletical  forms  and  strategies  were  unnecessary.  Rather,  these  homileticians  were  advocating  that  preachers  must  rediscover  and  redeem  traditional  approaches  to  preaching,  particularly  the  expository  method.  Hence  during  the  period  of  1970--1995  several  influential  expository  preaching  volumes  also  emerged  upon  the  homiletical  scene.
■520    ▼aChapter  2  consists  of  an  analysis  of  the  New  Homiletic  preaching  strategies  of  Charles  Rice,  Fred  Craddock,  Henry  Mitchell,  Eugene  Lowry,  and  David  Buttrick.  Though  no  consensus  exists  among  these  homileticians  concerning  a  single  homiletical  strategy,  they  do  share  some  common  hermeneutical  convictions  when  seeking  to  understand  the  message  of  the  biblical  text  to  the  contemporary  congregation.
■520    ▼aChapter  3  consists  of  an  analysis  of  the  expository  preaching  theory  of  D.  Martyn  Lloyd-Jones,  Haddon  Robinson,  John  R.  W.  Stott,  Bryan  Chapell,  and  Wayne  McDill.  Though  these  theorists  formulate  their  respective  expository  approaches  from  different  perspectives  and  with  different  emphases,  they  also  share  several  common  hermeneutical  convictions  that  inform  their  expository  methods.
■520    ▼aChapter  4  consists  of  a  comparison  of  the  New  Homiletic  and  expository  preaching  theory.  Several  common  concerns  are  evident  in  the  respective  preaching  theories  of  the  two  perspectives.  These  include  the  role  of  the  Bible  in  the  sermon  and  the  role  of  the  listener  in  the  interpretation  and  proclamation  of  the  biblical  text.  However,  despite  these  common  concerns,  this  study  concludes  that  the  preaching  theories  advocated  by  the  New  Homileticians  and  proponents  of  the  expository  method  represent  two  incompatible  approaches  to  contemporary  preaching.

■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  consists  of  an  analysis  and  comparison  of  two  influential  approaches  in  contemporary  preaching  theory---the  New  Homiletic  and  the  expository  method.  The  primary  purpose  of  this  dissertation  is  to  examine  the  relationship  between  hermeneutics  and  homiletics,  specifically  for  the  purpose  of  understanding  the  influence  of  one's  hermeneutical  convictions  upon  one's  homiletical  methodology.  This  dissertation  places  in  context  both  perspectives  as  they  relate  to  the  resurgence  of  interest  in  homiletics  during  the  period  of  1970--1995.
