요약 : Liturgical reformers in the 1920s and the early 1930s prepared the way for more stringent critiques of theological liberalism and the cultural captivity of American Protestantism that neo-orthodox theologians began to mount in the 1930s. Together with the ecumenical movement, neo-orthodoxy would redirect the liturgical impulse in the following decades. These movements turned the attention of liturgical reformers to the theology and ecclesiology expressed in historic liturgies. Mainline Protestant reformers came to value historic liturgies for their ability to involve worshipers in the corporate celebration of God's acts in Jesus Christ through Word and Sacrament. Protestants began to see sacramental worship as the action that manifested the church, the body of Christ, in the midst of a secular society. On this foundation, reformers in the 1960s started to move beyond traditional language and style and develop contemporary forms for liturgical worship. After the Second Vatican Council, they were joined in this effort by Roman Catholics. The development of the liturgical impulse through the 1960s laid groundwork for the more extensive efforts of subsequent decades to promote sacramental worship as the center of the church's life.

요약 : This dissertation examines efforts for liturgical reform within Methodist, Presbyterian, and Congregational churches from the 1920s through the 1960s. It focuses on the thought and practice of a variety of individuals and groups including Von Ogden Vogt, Willard L. Sperry, Henry Sloane Coffin, Francis Scott Brenner, the Order of St. Luke, James F. White, and denominational commissions. These Protestants sought to bring their worship services into closer alignment with historic traditions of Christian worship in order to reposition their churches both theologically and culturally. In turning to liturgical tradition, they opposed the pragmatic evangelicalism. that had shaped much of mainline Protestant worship. In the 1920s, they turned to historic liturgies and Gothic architecture, known to them primarily through the Protestant Episcopal Church, in order to reemphasize the transcendence of God and the importance and distinctive nature of the church. In both these ways liturgical reformers sought to respond to the challenges raised to liberal evangelicalism by the trauma of the First World War and by the declining cultural authority of Protestantism.
