요약The author analyzes in depth six selected catechisms from the sixteenth to the twentieth centuries for elements of religiosidad popular. The results of the analysis make evident the presence of popular religion as a combination of faith and culture in the sixteenth century catechetical texts. The investigation notes a gradual elimination of the cultural aspects in the texts, and their eventual replacement by the sole presentation of doctrine in the nineteenth century texts. The findings of the study suggest that the merging once again of the cultural religious meanings that express spirituality with the presentation of doctrine could revitalize catechesis and bring Christian evangelization to a second Golden Age.

요약The author reiterates, as other scholars have done, that religiosidad popular is central for Hispanic theology and is an explicit spirituality for Mexican Americans of the Southwest. The first part of the thesis examines the relationship between theological aesthetics, catechesis, and spirituality establishing a premise that the three disciplines formed a triad for the faith formation in the early church, which with time became separated. The second chapter broadens the spirituality lens demonstrating how religiosidad popular has emerged as a Christian expression of the faith of a mestizo people. A review of the scholarship of Church documents and Hispanic theologians yields five salient elements that identify religiosidad popular.

요약This thesis examines Hispanic/Latino religious practice and uses Texan Mexican-American political, religious, and cultural history to illustrate a spirituality. The study has two components: first, the author establishes that religiosidad popular is the explicit spirituality for Tejanos, Texan Mexican Americans, and second, she traces elements of this spirituality in the catechisms of various centuries.
