요약 : In the Summa, Thomas makes a new beginning in his treatment of the gifts, taking his lead from Scripture. The dialectical consideration beginning the question on the gifts in general shows signs of abandonment of the Scriptum position. His understanding of two notions central to the earlier treatise, those of the heroic virtues and the rule of the infused moral virtues, has changed such that a modal distinction for the gifts is no longer possible. Thomas argues in his second article that the gifts are necessary to guarantee the fundamental operations of the infused virtues. In the remainder of this question, Thomas develops an analogy of the gifts to the moral virtues that reveals more about the gifts' nature and the character of their inspirations. Although he abandons the notion of divine modality as essentially distinctive of the gifts, he does not hesitate to appropriate it to the gifts, as in the questions on the beatitudes and the particular moral gifts.

요약 : The development of doctrine on the gifts from the beginning of the Christian era through St. Bonaventure's Sentence commentary shows that Thomas's immediate predecessors employ Aristotelean methods to distinguish the gifts from the virtues according to their acts, using traditional distinctions from monastic writings on spiritual development. Albert criticizes these habits. In the Scriptum, Thomas uses the notions of mode and measure to establish an essential distinction. The gifts produce acts of a divine modality, that is acts befitting more the divine than the human nature. The modal distinction, however, fails to take sufficient account of the distinction between the acquired and infused moral virtues.

요약 : The disseration presents an interpretation, based on close readings of the textual sources, of St. Thomas Aquinas's teaching on the necessity of the gifts of the Holy Spirit for salavation. The precise question, "Are the gifts necessary for every salvific act?" is detailed in an opening investigation of Thomas's commentators. Apparent developments from the Scriptum super sententiis to the Summa theologiae pose problems for his interpreters.
