요약 : In chapter one, I investigate recent studies which have begun to look at the Histories of Herodotus in relationship to different works of Jewish history and fiction, arguing for the inclusion of Daniel among these works. Chapter two focuses on the traditions behind material in the Book of Daniel (especially in Dan 2, 7, and 11), claiming that Herodotus' Histories more successfully explain this material than do the Iranian and Mesopotamian sources to which recourse is frequently made. Chapter three begins a comparative look at the characterization of the human agents in history---the king and the sage---according to Daniel and Herodotus. Chapter four continues a comparative reading, focusing on the divine agency expressed in both Daniel and Herodotus through dreams, oracles, and apparitions. Chapter five concludes that this divine agency can be seen as operating on a parallel plane to human history, neither overriding nor canceling the necessity of human action and responsibility.

요약 : This dissertation seeks first of all to demonstrate the likelihood that the author of the Book of Daniel was familiar with the Histories of Herodotus. Writing in the middle of the second century B.C.E., at a time when the influence of Hellenistic culture was being increasingly felt among Jews in Palestine as well as among those in the Diaspora, Daniel uses and develops Herodotean concepts such as the succession of world empires, dynastic dreams, and the focus on both human and divine causation in explaining historical events. By a comparative reading of these two texts, this dissertation then illuminates Daniel's theology of history, showing it to be neither as exclusively eschatological nor as sectarian as it is often made out to be. The historical outlook of the Book of Daniel is seen as focused squarely on the period of extended "exile" of foreign rule. It is primarily the end of this period, not of history, that Daniel anticipates. The counterpart to the foreign kingdoms and their representative kings is the entire Jewish people, who are represented by their heavenly patrons, Michael and "One like a Son of Man."
