요약 : The Christian theological tradition has used the category of analogy to explain how human language can refer to God. This dissertation argues that the function of analogy, in ecclesial and liturgical contexts, is formative as well as referential. It claims that interpreting theological discourse, or discourse about God, through a figurative construal of analogy provides the church with an appropriate characterization of how we speak of the divine reality so that we may become participants in the reality of the divine. The transfiguration of Christ is used as a framework for understanding how analogical discourse both in-forms and forms the Christian community. I interpret the transfiguration as a biblically grounded, christologically focused, figuratively varied, and liturgically oriented disclosure of salvific transformation. My subsequent interpretation of language for the divine in terms of analogical usage shows the connections between a critical theological realism and a practical emphasis on soteriology, and demonstrates how metaphorical, narrative and liturgical discourse speak of the reality of God and God's work in the church and the world.

요약 : The first chapter is a theological commentary on the transfiguration of Christ, a particular, epiphanic manifestation of God that discloses the glorious, salvific and eschatological nature of his redemptive work. It is also portrayed in tensive, figural and liturgical language, which shows patterns of analogical usage. The second turns to David Burrell's interpretation of analogy as use, as opposed to proportionality, as in the work of Cajetan. It then delineates several prominent features of analogical usage: similarity-indifference, practical judgment, the frequent appearance of terms of evaluation and appraisal, contextual adaptability, semantic and existential generativity, and dialogical inquiry. The remaining chapters explore the ways in which metaphorical, narrative and liturgical forms of language in the Christian community evince "trans-figurative" uses of analogy by speaking of God and God's transfiguring action in the world, focusing on the work of Janet Soskice, Sallie McFague, Hans Frei, Paul Ricoeur and Gordon Lathrop. These chapters show that the story of Christ, and its enactment in worship, functions as the primary form of analogical discourse in the Christian community.
