요약 : This dissertation is a two-part study focusing on the issue of silence within human interaction. While much research has either neglected or dismissed its significance, I argue that the enactment of silence represents meaningful social action, and is part and parcel of the relational aspects of our selves. Part I of this study presents a general taxonomy of silence crafted from a broad search of the social scientific literature for any and all instances of silence within social encounters. Drawing these strands together, the taxonomy is structured upon the notion that silence operates as a meaningful and constitutive element in the production of social roles in relationship to relevant others at three distinct levels: the interactional, the organizational/institutional, and the sacred. Part II then employs the taxonomy to analyze the enactment of silence within a voluntary association of religious actors who assemble in small groups to perform the silent ritual of Christian Meditation. Based upon data from participant observation, in-depth interviews, and supplementary sources, I contend that Christian meditators have imbued this silence with five integral frames of meaning, namely antiquity, universality, purity, authority, and agency. Analysis of these meanings reveals fundamental and complex aspects of Christian meditators' religious role at all three taxonomic levels. The first two frames enable Christian meditators to forge interreligious relationships without threatening personal religious commitment, and hence facilitate the production of a pluralistic religious identity. The next three frames reveal Christian meditators' sense of unmediated communion with God and their utilization of this as a source of religious capital vis-a-vis institutional authority. This offers a corrective to economistic models in the sociology of religion that view the laity strictly as consumers of religious goods. Part II closes with an analysis of silence as a complex and fragile achievement. I examine the interactional forces that impact the generation and maintenance of Christian Meditation as a silent encounter, and argue that such attention is generally lacking within the sociology of culture. Throughout, this study maintains that a thorough comprehension of our roles, relationships, and shared cultural world requires an understanding of how we relate with silence.
