■520    ▼aExploring  the  characteristics  of  quality  music  programs  in  small  churches  supports  the  understanding  that  music  is  an  important  factor  in  choosing  where  to  attend  church.  The  general  problem  is  that  in  small  churches  the  quality  of  music  programs  is  declining  (Allen,  2009).  The  specific  problem  is  while  there  are  known  characteristics  contributing  to  quality  music  in  worship,  these  lend  themselves  to  the  medium  to  large  size  church  and  seldom  address  the  unique  needs  of  music  ministry  in  the  small  church  (Seibold,  1999).  The  purpose  of  this  qualitative  study  with  a  phenomenological  design  was  to  examine  the  lived  experiences  of  church  leaders  and  musicians  from  small  churches  with  quality  music  programs  concerning  the  characteristics  of  a  quality  music  ministry  and  the  impact  upon  the  wellbeing  of  the  small  church.  Thirteen  emerging  themes  identified  during  the  analysis  process  emphasized  the  importance  of  practice,  the  influence  of  the  style  of  music,  a  high  comfort  level,  and  passion.  The  findings  from  this  current  study  add  to  the  body  of  literature  on  the  characteristics  of  a  quality  music  ministry  in  the  small  church  as  described  from  the  lived  experiences  of  24  musicians  and  church  leaders  in  Georgia  Baptist  churches  with  less  than  150  in  worship  attendance.  Providing  results  and  analysis  for  church  leaders  and  musicians  may  aid  in  understanding  the  impact  of  a  quality  music  ministry  in  the  small  church.  The  research  suggests  opportunities  for  future  research  in  training,  children's  choirs  and  the  relationship  between  age  and  the  perception  of  a  quality  music  ministry.
