■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  attempts  to  clarify  the  meaning  and  role  of  experience  in  Christian  theological  ethics.    It  does  so  by  forwarding  a  specific  interpretation  of  experience  informed  by  Friedrich  Schleiermacher's  theory  of  consciousness.    This  Schleiermacherian  interpretation  of  experience  is  compared  to  some  alternative  paradigms  in  contemporary  theological  ethics,  namely  the  cultural-linguism  of  George  Lindbeck  and  the  naturalism/empiricism  of  James  Gustafson.    This  comparison  reveals  the  strengths  of  the  Schleiermacherian  account.    The  dissertation  draws  on  concepts  of  confession  and  conversation  to  forward  its  chief  methodological  thesis:  that  experience  should  have  generative,  regulative  and  justificatory  priority  in  Christian  ethics.  A  practical  test  of  the  usefulness  of  this  rehabilitated  experiential  method  in  Christian  ethics  shows  that  it  is  capable  of  ameliorating  some  longstanding  tensions  in  the  field  of  pastoral  counseling.
