요약 : Both Karl Barth and Emmanuel Levinas use the concept of the totally other, and develop an argument appropriate to it, in order to effect revolutions in their respective fields. This study proceeds on the assumption that there are important things to learn about the idea of the Other as such, which will in turn shed light on the workings of Barth's theology and Levinas' philosophy; and that, on the other hand, the right way to learn about the concept is to examine its use in the arguments of Barth and Levinas, in both length (their development and shifts in position) and breadth (what the concept of the Other leads them to affirm and deny in the range of theological and philosophical topics).

요약 : The question of what is to be learned by studying the Argument to the Other in the writings of Barth and Levinas is raised and answered in several ways. First, the Argument has the effect of putting the self in a certain practical position with respect to the person (God or neighbor) identified as Other, which implies a certain reorientation of theoretical reason with respect to the authority of the Other. Secondly, the Argument argues the transcendence of language over experience, which grounds a revised conception of the rational as an "empty" gesture signifying obedience to the Other. Finally, we consider the real and serious differences between Barth's and Levinas' positions as suggestive of a normative model of the difference and competition between philosophy and theology, operating according to different Reasons based on responsibility to differently identified Others.

요약 : We find that for both men the advent of the idea of the Other is associated with a political shock: in Barth's case the first World War, and in Levinas' case the rise of the Nazis in Germany. The critical reaction of both to the ways of thinking that were seen to be discredited in these shocks--liberal "experience-theology," on the one hand, and Heidegger's "ontologism" on the other--leads to the proclamation of a crisis based on a mainly negative conception of the total Otherness of God, in Barth's Epistle to the Romans, as the first premise of theology, and the total Otherness of the neighbor, in Levinas' Totality and Infinity, as the ethical first premise of philosophy. As the purely non-given, the Other transcends any knowledge or evaluation. But later both men place greater emphasis on unique givenness rather than non-givenness as the meaning of Otherness. This "logic" of the Other is implicit in Barth's espousal of the dogmatic task and his progress through "dialectical theology" and beyond to the analogia fidei of the Church Dogmatics. It is also implicit in the later shift in Levinas' thinking, which appears in comparing Autrement qu'etre ou au-dela de l'essence (1974) with Totality and Infinity (1961): the Other-than-the-Same, infinitely distant, becomes the Other-in-the-Same, infinitely close. For both Barth and Levinas the meaning of the Other is linked to the election of the self, who is prevented by the argument of Otherness from presuming to choose or know the Good, since the Good has already chosen the self, opening a problem of justification for the self and for man. These parallel developments are investigated with reference to the writings of Barth between 1909 and 1932 (from "Moderne Theologie und Reichsgottesarbeit" through Church Dogmatics I/1) and the writings of Levinas between 1930 and 1975 (from Theory of Intuition in Husserl's Phenomenology to "God and Philosophy").
