■520    ▼aFeelings  of  betrayal  are  likely  to  arise  in  children  of  divorce  when  relationships  with  parents  change  so  that  children  feel  less  valued  as  parental  attention  and  presence  become  less  reliable.  Faith  as  fundamental  trust  in  God's  ultimate  trustworthiness  has  the  potential  to  address  these  feelings  of  betrayal  and  their  consequent  regression  to  enable  intimacy  formation  free  of  debilitating  fear.
■520    ▼aIn  order  to  actualize  the  gift  of  fundamental  trust  in  God,  persons  may  need  help  resolving  psychodynamic  regression,  differentiating  from  their  families  of  origin,  and  emotionally  reconnecting  with  others.  Fundamental  trust  in  God  may  be  mediated  by  pastoral  carepersons  acting  as  ritual  coordinators  who  represent  the  numinous  and  who  function  as  reconcilers  and  iconoclasts.
■520    ▼aThis  dissertation  suggests  that  a  pastoral  approach  based  on  Jesus  as  Invitation,  Appeal,  and  Challenge  to  risk  fundamental  trust  in  God  may  be  effective  for  pastoral  care  to  adult  children  of  divorce  struggling  with  anxiety  in  intimacy.  It  claims  that  feelings  of  betrayal  by  divorcing  and  divorced  parents  may  contribute  to  this  anxiety,  which  may  be  expressed  through  the  regressive  themes  of  mistrust,  shame  and  self-doubt,  and  guilt.
