■520    ▼aSince  the  Puritan  sermon  was  the  most  important  genre  in  seventeenth-century  New  England,  it  is  not  surprising  to  find  numerous  sermon  studies,  which  generally  fall  into  three  categories:  analyses  of  individual  preachers,  analyses  of  individual  kinds  of  sermons,  and  analyses  of  certain  aspects  of  the  genre  such  as  image  clusters.  This  dissertation  differs  in  that  it  uses  computer  technology  to  produce  a  quantitative  analysis  of  seven  schemes,  seven  tropes,  and  six  other  rhetorical  features  found  in  three  kinds  of  occasional  sermons:  fast  days,  General  Court  elections,  and  artillery  elections.  The  occurrence  of  such  devices  is  analyzed  in  light  of  some  major  events  in  the  new  world.  The  findings  of  this  study  demonstrate  that  the  Puritan  preachers,  the  chief  intellectuals  of  their  society,  held  tremendous  influence  in  the  commonwealth.  The  preachers  were  Biblicists  who  altered  their  rhetorical  strategies  for  the  various  occasions  even  though  their  overriding  purpose  was  always  persuasive.  This  study  does  not  examine  Sunday  sermons,  which  were  more  likely  to  deal  with  issues  of  personal  salvation,  but  it  focuses  instead  on  the  political  use  of  preaching.  The  conclusion  of  this  dissertation  is  that  while  the  Puritan  sermon  remained  static  in  its  tripartite  structure,  consistent  reliance  on  scripture,  and  overriding  themes,  the  preachers  adeptly  changed  the  language  to  suit  the  specific  occasion  and  audience.
