요약 : Chapter IV through VIII trace the development of Gregory's ethic of slavery and emancipation. Relevant passages from On the Lord's Prayer, On Ecclesiastes, On the Holy Pascha, Against Eunomius, Against the Fornicators, and the Catechetical Oration are analyzed in terms of both their historical and liturgical settings. Analysis of his arguments show that Gregory condemned slavery, called for voluntary emancipation, and urged serious reforms of the master/slave relationship. His arguments are based upon Christian doctrines of anthropology and, increasingly, upon Nicene Christology.

요약 : Chapter IX examines the possible influence of Gregory's ethic upon contemporaries and immediate successors, namely Gregory of Nazianzen, Theodosius I, and John Chrysostom. Two Appendices deal with the dating, paraphrase and translation of Homilies I-IV, On Ecclesiastes, which contain Gregory's longest sustained argument against slavery.

요약 : Gregory of Nyssa, inspired by the ascetic piety associated with Eustathius and reacting to family constraints, developed a unique ethic of slavery characterized by voluntary emancipationism and based upon Christian doctrines of anthropology and Christology.

요약 : The first three chapters present the historical context within which Gregory developed his ethic, and account for the factors which inspired and shaped his position. The Stoic philosophers expressed their greatest interest in slavery centuries before Gregory, but contemporary figures like Libanius are more conservative. Laws of the Theodosian Code, beginning with Constantine, empowered the Church to emancipate, yet retained oppressive patterns. The military, social, and economic patterns indicate a shift from a slave to serf-based economy. Chapter II identifies Eustathius as the inspiration for Gregory's challenge to slavery. The Council of Gangra condemned Eustathius for repudiating marriage and slavery. Basil's letters and the histories of Socrates and Sozomen show that Eustathius continued his anti-slavery activities and that he had positive impact upon the younger Gregory for twenty years. The Bible, Alexandrian theology, and contemporary church policies contributed to Gregory's ethic. Gregory competed with the emancipationism of his rivals, the Neo-Arians, by basing his ethic upon Nicene Christology. Gregory's brother, Basil, contributed important elements to Gregory's ethic, although Basil was conservative on slavery issues.
