요약 : Chapter I introduces the topic, development, and goals of the dissertation. Chapter II considers various aspects of the study of speeches and presents an illustrative description of this study by numerous scholars, in a variety of academic disciplines, studying speeches in many blocks of literature. Chapter III provides an ordered, theoretical presentation of various aspects of the nature and function of speeches in literature, particularly in narratives and narrative historiography. Chapter IV introduces in general the reported direct speeches in DtrH and presents some basic generalizations about these speeches based upon a survey of all such speeches. Chapter V studies four chapters in DtrH (Joshua 1, Joshua 23, 1 Samuel 12, 1 Kings 8). It seeks to give exclusive attention to each of these chapters, focus on the speeches within each chapter, and consider specifically the speeches' nature and function as speeches. Finally, Chapter VI considers the implications of the studies in Chapter V for understanding several fundamental themes in DtrH. This chapter concludes with several suggestions concerning the further study of DtrH and its speeches.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation is concerned with the nature and function of speeches in literature--the act of speaking or the words spoken by characters in literary works. It assumes that the presence, mode, form, and function of the words of characters are strategic compositional features of an author's construction of the design and meaning of a work. This dissertation examines speeches in literature as a theoretical concept and as a literary device used by the author(s) of the Deuteronomistic History (DtrH), the biblical books of Joshua through 2 Kings. Its findings are that currently there does not exist an interdisciplinary, theoretical, integrated foundation or model for the study of speeches in literature: that the basic nature of reported direct speech (direct discourse) in DtrH is little understood or misunderstood; and that passages containing speeches in DtrH are better understood when attention is paid to the presence and distinctive features of the speeches within them.
