요약 : During the early empire, the Imperial Cult epitomized the public discourse of the Greek cities. Recent research on the Imperial Cult by S. R. F. Price and others suggests that, in addition to aiding the construction of imperial power, emperor worship was employed by the local "high elite" to elevate themselves over all other residents of the city. Central to the iconography of this cult was the figure of the enthroned emperor.

요약 : In addition to exploring the cultural-critical edge of Jesus' enthronement, Saturnalicius Princeps also appropriates the work of Victor Turner in order to examine how the motif functioned within early Christianity to encourage experiments in social relationships that provided alternatives to the social patterns maintained by the public discourses of city and empire. The study concludes by comparing the social ideals that evolved in the private discourses of the early Christian house churches with those associated with the Greco-Roman festival of the Saturnalia.

요약 : One of the more prevalent ploys of private discourses is "symbolic inversion" in which terms set in binary opposition in the public discourse are reversed. The last becomes first and the first becomes last. Behind the doors of the early house churches, the enthronement of Jesus critiqued the hierarchy of social relationships of city and empire (symbolized by the icon of the enthroned emperor) by means of such an inversion. The figure of the enthroned Jesus (the last) replaced the Princeps (the first). In doing so, the enthronement of Jesus: (a) undercut the honorific status of the emperor, and (b) deconstructed the hegemonic claims of the civic magistrates on the local level.

요약 : Saturnalicius Princeps is a study of the social functions of the motif of Jesus' enthronement in first-century Christianity. Specific enthronement texts of the New Testament (Psalm 110:1, Philippians 2:6-11, Mark 15:16-20, and Revelation 13) are analyzed in terms of their relationship to the "public discourse" of the cities of the Greek East. The research of anthropologist James C. Scott regarding the systemic interrelationship of public and private discourses provides the methodology for the dissertation.
