요약 : Chapter Five turns to a study of "brief stories" in Mark's gospel from 8:27 to 10:45. The anecdotes are analyzed as to their form, content, and function both within the gospel narrative and as vehicles for Mark's portrait of Jesus. Fourteen anecdotes are identified; nine anecdotes take the form of chreiai, five of which display argumentative patterns including the ergasia.

요약 : Chapter Three examines the rabbinic expression of the anecdote. The stories of the Mishnaic division Mo'ed are studied along with all anecdotes in the Mishnah which feature Rabbi Gamaliel II. The function of the anecdotes and the portrait of Gamaliel presented in the Mishnaic anecdotes are considered. The fourth chapter presents a review of past scholarship on New Testament anecdotes.

요약 : The Conclusion of the dissertation compares the anecdotes of the Demonax, the Mishnah, and Mark's gospel. The results indicate that while the content of the three sets of stories is peculiar to its respective cultural setting, each set of anecdotes functioned to enhance the purposes of its host genre. The anecdotes of Mark 8:27-10:45 portray Jesus as a persuasive teacher, apocalyptic prophet, and suffering Messiah. The anecdotes teach the meaning of Christian discipleship given God's activity in Jesus, the Son of Man.

요약 : The second chapter investigates Greek anecdotes as they appear in Lucian's Demonax, using the definition and typologies for the chreia found in the ancient progymnasmata. These anecdotes are studied both as to their genre and their function within the Demonax, particularly as they reveal the character of Demonax.

요약 : This dissertation is a study of the "anecdote," or "brief story," as it appears in the Greek or Roman, rabbinic, and early Christian literary worlds. The purpose of the study is to clarify the genre of the anecdotes in Mark's gospel, in particular Mark 8:27 to 10:45, through a comparison of these anecdotes with those of a Greek work and a rabbinic text. Chapter One defines and discusses the genre "anecdote," that is, its form, content, and function.
