요약 : The Christian virtue tradition, with Aristotle and Augustine figuring prominently in its canon, sought to give as philosophically sophisticated an account of the moral life as could be harmonized with Scripture. Jonathan Edwards' intellectual pedigree makes him heir to both of this tradition's major streams. Edwards' participation in both the Neoplatonic and predestinarian dimensions of Augustine's legacy is well documented. Significantly less explored is the fact that like almost any other pre-modern moral philosopher, he shared a disposition-based conception of the self and a virtue-based conception of ethics drawn from Christian Aristotelian sources. Indeed, the failure to appreciate how Aristotelian arguments undergird a portion of Edwards' insistence that moral agents cannot save themselves has wrongly led some interpreters to suppose that he regarded any more limited freedom as either irrelevant or philosophically uninteresting. With primary reference to four foci of Puritan theological debate---(i) the precise nature of the Holy Spirit's indwelling, (ii) the status of secondary causes of grace, (iii) the role of the practical syllogism in assurance of salvation, and (iv) the nature of Christian righteousness as imputed or inherent---this dissertation seeks to pinpoint the role of autonomous human effort and communal habituation in Edwards' ethics given that a divinely orchestrated conversion is also necessary. One of the most dramatic results of viewing Edwards through the lens of Aristotelian ethics is the interpretive possibility that he meaningfully departed from the Synod of Dort program of Reformed orthodoxy. While his Aristotelian side never superseded his Augustinian side, this reappraisal does suggest that the prevalent image of Edwards as a dyed-in-the-wool revivalist and orthodox Calvinist warrants reevaluation, as does the widely held presumption that the Christian virtue tradition ended in Europe with the waning of the Renaissance and Reformation.
