■520    ▼aBurnout  continues  to  create  problems  for  employees,  employers  and  customers  in  the  people  helping  professions.  Some  employees  remain  unaffected  from  its  effects  while  others  are  paralyzed  and  become  ineffective.  While  much  research  has  been  conducted  on  burnout  and  possible  buffers,  little  has  been  done  to  examine  the  association  between  perception  as  a  buffer  and  burnout.  Examining  the  impact  of  employees'  perception  from  the  focal  point  of  organizational  culture  and  locus  of  control  was  measured  in  relation  to  burnout  and  coping  to  determine  a  relationship  between  perception,  burnout,  and  coping,  which  may  shield  employees  from  the  effects  of  burnout.  The  buffering  or  shielding  that  might  mitigate  effects  of  burnout  may  include  perceptions  of  organizational  culture  and  locus  of  control.  This  study  builds  on  the  works  of  others  in  the  fields  of  culture,  locus  of  control,  burnout,  and  coping.  The  participants  were  public  assistance  caseworkers  in  the  State  of  Indiana.  The  research  tool  was  the  Pressure  Management  Indicator,  (PMI)  developed  by  Resource  Systems  of  the  United  Kingdom.  The  study  found  that  internal  locus  of  control  was  significant  in  relation  to  decreased  burnout  and  increased  use  of  coping  skills  in  an  organizational  environment  where  the  culture  was  perceived  as  negative.
