요약 : This research study was comprised of two phases, both utilizing a qualitative and a phenomenological research design using in-person audiotaped interviews with family members and telephone interviews with mental health professionals. Phase I of the study explored the life experiences of family members in coping, adapting and managing a relative's mental illness. The phenomenological approach provided an opportunity for family members to voice the essences of their life experiences with mental illness through the examination of their caregiving burdens and self-care techniques. Phase II of the research study focused on mental health professionals' perspectives of working with families experiencing mental illness, such as the challenges and rewards, availability of services, training, and stigma. Results from this study reiterate findings from other studies demonstrating that families continue to voice their concerns and needs. The major finding of this research study relates to the families' perceptions of the mental health system and the perceived lack of collaboration efforts that they feel is occurring. Family members are very vocal in expressing their desire for mental health professionals to develop a policy of family inclusion which includes acceptance, validation, acknowledgment, and respect. On the other hand, mental health professionals are asking that family members be more proactive in their involvement with their relative diagnosed with mental illness. Families are the vital link between home and community...and may be one of the most powerful factors affecting the outcome of the individual's recovery.
