요약 : In order to determine the presuppositions of this study, chaplains initially met with family to help them sign the necessary papers to enroll in hospice. The purpose of the meeting was not to assess spirituality or to provide spiritual care, but to explain hospice services. A part of the presentation was to describe the team approach of hospice---nurse, social worker, chaplain, and aide. This initial encounter enabled the chaplains to introduce themselves. After all papers were signed and questions answered, chaplains had the opportunity to ask if the family would like another visit. The outcome of this question was the basis for the research findings.
초록/해제
요약 : Spiritual care is an integral part of caring for the dying. Spiritual care is not limited in its scope by religious beliefs, practices, spirituality or cultural diversity. At its best, spiritual care seeks to meet the needs of patients and their families in a way that is meaningful to them.
초록/해제
요약 : The findings indicated that meeting the chaplain in person during the sign-on process to hospice exponentially increased the likelihood that the patient and/or family would welcome the chaplain to visit again. These findings have potential ramifications for the use of chaplains in the future. The breadth of knowledge and expertise of chaplains are under-utilized when restricted by methods or protocols.
초록/해제
요약 : This dissertation/project investigated whether a chaplain's face-to-face contact with a patient in the initial sign-on phase increases the likelihood for future chaplain involvement. Current practices and procedures limit access of the chaplain to patients and their families. Most healthcare agencies require an assessment by another discipline before allowing the chaplain to contact the patient and/or family. Limited access early in the process may create barriers which are hard to overcome as the illness progresses.
