요약 : The Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) requires schools of social work to include diversity content relating to cultural competence in all social work curricula (CSWE, 2001). Due to the growing minority population in the United States, culturally competent practice is increasingly important. Culturally competent practice has been linked to racial attitudes (Banaszynski, 2000; Neville, Lilly, Duran, Lee, & Browne, 2000; Ottavi, Pope-Davis & Dings, 1994; Pope-Davis & Ottavi, 1994; Spears, 2004), awareness of White privilege (Ancis & Szymanski, 2001; Neville et al., 2000), and cultural awareness (Cuevas, 2002; Sowers-Hoag & Sandau-Beckler, 1996; Van Soest & Garcia, 2003). Using a correlational cross-sectional design, this study explored the relationship between the level of social work education (BSW, MSW, or BSW/MSW) and racial attitudes, including White Racial Consciousness and color-blind racial attitudes, and cultural awareness in self-identified White social work practitioners who are members of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW). A disproportional stratified random sample of White BSW and MSW social workers was obtained from Infocus, the manager of the NASW mailing list, and participants completed several self-report instruments using a web-based survey hosted on a commercial survey-hosting site. Racial attitudes were measured using the Oklahoma Racial Attitudes Scale (ORAS) and the Color-blind Racial Attitudes Scale (CoBRAS), and cultural awareness was measured using the Cultural Awareness Scale (CAS). Over one-third of the social workers in this study were categorized in negative racial attitude types, indicating that they may have difficulty providing culturally competent services. Other findings were mixed, but indicated that baccalaureate-level White social workers may be less aware of color-blind racial attitudes and less culturally aware than their MSW and BSW/MSW counterparts.
